Guide

What jobs can you get with Civil Service eligibility?

Short answer

Subprofessional eligibility qualifies you for first-level (clerical/support) government roles; Professional qualifies you for first- and second-level positions. Eligibility is a requirement for permanent appointment — not an automatic job offer.

Passing the Civil Service Exam earns you eligibility — but eligibility isn't a job, it's a key that unlocks the door to permanent government employment. This guide explains which positions Professional and Subprofessional eligibility qualify you for, how eligibility interacts with a position's own qualification standards, and what to do next once you've passed.

Primary keyword: jobs with civil service eligibility

First-level vs. second-level positions

Government career positions are split into levels. First-level positions are clerical, trades, crafts, and custodial roles — the support backbone of an office. Second-level positions are professional, technical, and scientific roles up to division-chief level, the ones that typically require a relevant degree.

Subprofessional eligibility qualifies you for first-level positions. Professional eligibility qualifies you for both first- and second-level positions — which is why college graduates aiming for professional roles take the Professional level. Eligibility sets the ceiling; your education and experience determine which specific positions within that ceiling you actually qualify for.

Eligibility is necessary, not sufficient

Holding eligibility makes you appointable to a permanent position, but it doesn't hand you one. Each vacancy has qualification standards covering education, experience, training, and the relevant eligibility. You still apply, compete, and get selected like any other candidate — eligibility is the entry ticket that lets you be considered for permanent appointment at all.

Without the right eligibility, you can sometimes hold a position only in a temporary or contractual capacity. Eligibility is what converts that into a path to a permanent, tenured government career.

What to do once you pass

Download your Certificate of Eligibility from the CSC online portal once results are posted. Then watch official government job postings — agencies publish vacancies through the CSC and their own channels — and apply to positions whose qualification standards you meet.

Because Career Service eligibility does not expire, there's no rush created by the eligibility itself. Take the time to target roles that fit your degree and experience rather than applying indiscriminately.

What can I do with Professional eligibility?+

Professional eligibility qualifies you for both first- and second-level positions, including professional and technical roles up to division-chief level, subject to each position's qualification standards.

Does my eligibility expire if I don't use it right away?+

No. Career Service eligibility from the CSE-PPT does not expire. Once earned, it's yours for life.
